Nursing is a profession which involves looking after medical patients in a hospital or nursing home. Nursing courses in India can be categorized into bachelor’s degree courses (B.Sc Nursing) and master’s degree courses (M.Sc Nursing). In addition, diploma courses in nursing are also offered by a number of healthcare education institutes in India like General Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM) diploma courses. The country is home to 1,200 nursing degree schools, 2,000 nursing diploma schools, and 281 M.Sc nursing colleges. Every year, approximately 60,000 nurses are produced by the nation.

DGNM

Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery

The purpose of GNM Nursing course is to prepare a Qualified General Nurse who will function as a member of a Health Team beginning with consultancies for first level position in both hospital and community health services especially in rural areas. The school prepares the students to develop an aptitude for nursing and to provide the required knowledge and skills to give comprehensive nursing care to patients with all types of illness. Most of the nursing colleges in Bangalore offer direct admission to Diploma in GNM and ANM courses.

• Curriculum: As per Nursing Council of India and the University

Eligibility :

  1. Minimum and Maximum age for admission will be 17 and 30 years respectively.
  2. Minimum educational qualification:
    A pass in 10+2 with a minimum aggregate of 45% marks. A minimum score of 45% is also required in English subject separately.
    Those who have cleared 10+2 vocational A.N.M (Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery) course (revised after 2001) from the School recognized by Indian Nursing Council.
    A.N.M training i.e, 10+1 years training should also have passed +2 or its equivalent examination.
  3. Admission of students shall be once in a year
  4. Students shall be medically fit.

B.Sc.

BSc Nursing

B. Sc. Nursing Course is a 4-year undergraduate degree program which follows the syllabus prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council. The aim of this program is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services, who can make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of individuals in pursuit of health. The students may function in the hospital, community – nursing services and conduct research studies in the areas of Nursing Practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor, and manager in a clinical/public health setting. Majority of reputed nursing colleges in Bangalore offer direct admission to BSc Nursing and PB BSc Nursing course without any entrance exams.

The BSc Nursing Course has been further divided into 2 separate courses based on eligibility.

BSc Nursing (Basic)

• Duration: 4 Years
• Curriculum: As per Nursing Council of India and the Karnataka Nursing Council

Eligibility :

  1. The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year in which admission is sought.
  2. Minimum education – 10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) & English Core/English Elective with aggregate of 45% marks from recognized board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSCE/HSCE or other equivalent Board.
  3. A student shall be medically fit.
  4. Students appearing in 10+2 examination in Science conducted by National Institute of Open School with 45% marks.
  5. A student shall be admitted once in a year.

Post Basic BSc Nursing

• Duration: 2 years
• Curriculum: As per Nursing Council of India and the University

Eligibility :

  1. Passed the Higher Secondary or Senior Secondary or Intermediate or 10+2 or an equivalent examination recognized by the university for this purpose. Those who have done 10+1 in or before 1986, will be eligible for admission.
  2. Obtained a certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery and registered as R.N.R.M. with the State Nurses Registration Council. A male nurse, trained before the implementation of the new integrated course besides being registered as a nurse with State Nurses Registration Council, shall produce evidence of training approved by Indian Nursing Council for a similar duration in lieu of midwifery in any one of the areas of O.T. Techniques, Ophthalmic Nursing, Leprosy Nursing, TB Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Cancer Nursing, Orthopedic Nursing.
  3. Candidates shall be medically fit.
  4. Students shall be admitted once in a year.

M.Sc.

MSc Nursing

MSc. Nursing Course is a 2-year postgraduate degree program which follows the syllabus prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council. Nursing Education, Clinical Nursing, and Nursing Management are some of the subjects covered under the course. Students with Bachelor degree in nursing with a minimum of 50% marks can seek admission to the course on the basis of various entrance exams at times. The students later get employed in the hospitals, community centers services and conduct research studies in the areas of Nursing Practice. They are also expected to assume the role of senior nurses, supervisors, or managers in a clinical/public health setting. Most reputed nursing colleges in Bangalore offer direct admission to MSc Nursing course without any entrance exams, for students with relevant work experience.

Eligibility :

  1. The candidate should be a Registered Nurse and Registered midwife of equivalent with any State Nursing Registration Council.
  2. The Minimum education requirements shall be the passing of B.Sc. Nursing/B.Sc. Hons. Nursing/Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks.
  3. The candidate should have undergone in B.Sc. Nursing / B.Sc. Hons. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing in an institution which is recognized by Indian Nursing Council.
  4. Minimum one year of work experience after Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
  5. Minimum one year of work experience prior or after Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing.
